The Lakeland Hawks baseball team (3-5) were swept by the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (6-4) on April 6 in a doubleheader. They lost the first game 12-2, and the second ended 17-1.
Evan Shanley started pitching the first game, and the Vikings scored three runs in the first inning.
In the second inning, the Vikings extended their lead, taking advantage of the Hawks’ throwing errors.
Colin Killian was put in to pitch in the third inning, and the Vikings scored only one run.
The fourth inning ended on a passed ball. Catcher Jace Cooksey threw it to Killian for the tag at home plate.
“I felt I did good. I can improve on my effort, especially at the end of the game,” Cooksey said. “As a team, we can work on our approaches. We were swinging at bad pitches, and we were not really hustling to get the ball.”
Cash Lund managed to get the Hawks on the board in the fourth inning, as well as taking over on the mound.
“This was my first time pitching for varsity [this year]. I feel like I did alright. I feel like I could have thrown more changeups and offspeeds,” Lund said. “I feel like we need to get more contact with batting and getting more players on the bases.”
In the second game, the Vikings kept it rolling, scoring three runs off Raiston Ellwood in the first.
Lund began pitching in the third inning and only let two runs score, but he kept the Vikings from scoring in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Vikings gained 10 runs in the sixth inning, ending the game.
“I think the boys competed and fought hard during the whole thing and kept their chins held up. They did as I asked; played with their hair on fire,” head coach Al Bevacqua said. “I think we need to get more aggressive at the plate and look to hit more fastballs.”
