Ghostbusters is, without a doubt, one of the most well-known franchises in the history of cinema. It has become a cult classic in the movie world and society as a whole. There have been movies, action figures, television shows, fan art, and cosplay adaptations of characters. 

One thing missing is a video game that captures what it’s like to bust ghosts in a whimsical and fantastical world like in the Ghostbusters story. Ghostbusters: Spirit Unleashed captures this essence with ease.

Jump directly into the shoes of a ghost buster. Ghostbusters: Spirit Unleashed is a first-person shooter game where you capture ghosts in the first person using your favorite proton packs and ghost traps. You can play as a ghost catcher in a janitor’s outfit with a gun that shoots lasers, or you can play as a devilish mayhem-inducing ghost. 

Roam, destroy, and possess innocent bystanders as well as objects as the foolish Busters run aimlessly, trying to catch you.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was released on Oct. 18, 2022, by IllFonic, designed to bring the feeling of catching ghosts alongside your buddies to the forefront. I believe the developers at IllFonic did precisely that. That being said, some downfalls made the game harder to enjoy.

This game starts with four busters and one ghost, all played by online players; the busters are pitted against the ghost and work together to capture it in one of the few maps, they work to catch the ghost, but this is not the way to win. For as the ghost is caught, that player respawns as another ghost. The only way for the busters to win is to destroy the three respawn relics and catch the ghost afterward. The ghost could also be caught four times, but this is a feat of astronomical feats for catching the ghost that many times in a 10-minute match is almost impossible.

The ghost has many ways to attack and stop the busters from both destroying the respawn relics and catching him. So many moves can be used that somebody who doesn’t play games a lot can win. The busters have to know what they’re doing to win, which is a rare occurrence. 

You are able to completely customize your character in-game, giving you the unique character that you have always dreamed of.

The customization options are plentiful and vary from hair type and color to body type and color, clothes, items, proton pack upgrades, and more.

All in all, this game is a pretty fun and interesting game that introduces plenty of nostalgia. Although the relationship between the ghost and the buster may need to be altered and more balanced, the game is still very good and entertaining overall.
