Lady Hawks Lose Big in Season Opener

Lakeland Hawks Kenna Simon and Addie Kiefer led the team in scoring in a blowing loss to the Lake City Timberwolves with a score of 57-26. 

The Lakeland Lady Hawks played their first game of the 2021-2022 season against the Lake City Timberwolves. 

The Lakeland basketball team has a lot of new changes, with key former players such as Abbey Neff and Katy Ryan graduating. 

Yet with some players leaving, the team got tons of young and new talent, players such as Landree Simon, Ziya Munyer, Emily Knowles, Natalie Richardson, Caroline Gallus. 

Landree Simon and Ziya Munyer are both freshmen that made it to the varsity level. 

During the first quarter, points were hard to come by for the Lady Hawks, only scoring two points, while Lake City scored 15 points. 

The Hawks made drastic improvements going into the 2nd quarter, outscoring Lake City by two points, with the Hawk Scoring 11 points, while Lake City scored 9 points. 

Entering the half, Lake City near double Lakeland’s points, with a score of 24-13. 

Lakeland needed huge momentum entering the 2nd half for a chance to come back into the game. 

Lake City Timberwolves had other plans though, as they scored 26 points in the third quarter alone

Lakeland was only able to score eight points in the third quarter, which was three times as few points as Lake City. 

Sophia Zufelt added 11 points, Kamryn Pickford 10 for Lake City, which outscored Lakeland 26-8 in the quarter. 

Kursten McKellips dominated in the 2nd half, scoring 12 of her 15 points in the second half, including eight in the third quarter, for Lake City. 

In the fourth quarter, The Lakeland Hawks were able to score five points, while Lake City scored seven to secure the victory and win their second straight game to remain undefeated. 

Addie Kiefer lead the Hawks in points with seven, and Kenna Simon followed right behind her with six. 

Both Kursten McKellips and Sophia Zufelt scored double digit points, with McKellips scoring 15, and Zufelt scoring 10. 

The Lakeland Hawks fall to 0-1 in the season, while the Lake City Timberwolves go to 2-0. 

Lakelands next game will be Thursday, November 18th at Lakeland High School against the Timberlake Tigers at 7pm.
