On May 13, 2021, the Lakeland Lady Hawks played their second game in the district tournament against the Sandpoint Lady Bulldogs. They lost the first game against Sandpoint on Tuesday and faced elimination in Thursday’s game on the road against the Lady Bulldogs. Lakeland faced adversity and rose to the challenge, winning Thursday’s game 13-4.

Senior Hailey Gosch started the game for the Lakeland Lady Hawks and threw 34 pitches in two innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out one while giving up no runs.

Devry Bursch came in to relieve Gosch, threw 70 pitches in four innings, walked one, struck out five and allowed four hits and four runs.

Kathryn Wardak closed out the game for the Lady Hawks, throwing 18 pitches in one inning, allowing a hit and a walk, and striking out two.

Harley See, Hailey Gosch, Haylee Smit, Olivia Staudinger and Cienna Walls all got multiple hits for the Lady Hawks on the day, helping them have a much more consistent offensive day than they did on Tuesday against the Lady Bulldogs.

Haylee Smit, Cienna Walls and Kathryn Wardak all got multiple runs batted in, scoring the majority of the runs for Lakeland on the day.

The season would have been over for Lakeland if they didn’t pull through on Thursday, but behind a solid offensive day and dominant pitching, the Lady Hawks forced a game three.

Lakeland and Sandpoint will play a win or go home game on Saturday at noon with a state bid on the line. The game will be at home.
