As April comes to a close, many of our Lakeland High School spring sports are heading into districts, with Baseball starting at just the end of this week and softball not too far behind. Baseball faces their first district game May 1 against Lewiston Senior High School. Tennis and Track and Field follow the week after with their first district competitions taking place on the 7 of May and last but not least Softball heads into districts on the May 14.
Softball has been a consistent dominating factor in the league this season with a conference record of 11-1 and overall of 19-5. Some team leaders for the LHS softball team have been Kiersten Drake, Ada Blakemore, Raygen Dutton, and Delilah Zimmerman. “I think having confidence and knowing that we have the home field advantage and that they have to come to us and beat us twice is going to be the key to staying on top,” Second Baseman Dutton said.
Baseball has been improving over the years and has had a stronger season compared to past seasons. Their current season record is 5-9 for conference and 9-11 overall. They are third in the 5A IEL conference and on May 1, if they win both games, the first against Lewiston Senior
High School and the second against Sandpoint High School they will earn a birth to the state tournament.
Districts is one of the last curtain calls for teams, and even more so for seniors who aren’t going on to play the sport in college. This makes districts a wake up call to some athletes, that these games are truly their last opportunity to leave it all out on the field, track, or court. “For districts I am just focusing on what I can do and not thinking of it as an individual sport but more of what I can produce for the rest of the team,” Senior Jake Larcher said.
