Saturday morning, on March 22, five kids arrived at Lake City High School with the intent of talking to people in hopes of being told they can travel to Southern Idaho to do it again in Pocatello on April 10 and 11.
For three of the five, this was their first time competing in speech districts, and all five kids brought their A game to represent Lakeland. With competitors in informative speaking, communication analysis, *aubrie’s event*, and retold the story, the Lakeland students gave a very good representation of Lakeland.
Colt Williams took first place in communication analysis, qualifying for state.
In informative speaking, Kylee Justesen took second place, qualifying for state, and Stormy Lawson took third, securing the first alternate position in case first or second place cannot go to state. This was both girls’ first time competing in the district tournament.
Michael Gallus took third place in retold story, also qualifying for state on his first time competing in districts.
Aubrie Hodgkins competed in the tournament, double-entering in the retold story and impromptu events, though she did not qualify for the state tournament or an alternate position in either event.
Even though it was a long day, with students being there from eight in the morning to around three in the afternoon, the Lakeland kids didn’t let it get them down, still giving it their all and doing their best to represent their school.
Overall, the speech team represented Lakeland very well, with only one participant dropping below third place and three competitors qualifying for state with one alternate available in informative speaking just in case something happens and the qualifiers can’t compete in April.
