Lakeland Students Earn Top Honors at District 1 Solo & Ensemble Competition
Lakeland High School music students had a strong showing at the District 1 Solo & Ensemble Competition this past weekend, with several performers earning high marks and two qualifying for the state competition.
Maverick Baldwin placed second in the state tuba category, while Stormy Lawson earned third place for state mezzo-soprano voice. Both students qualified to compete at the state level in May after their impressive performances during the event.
The District 1 Solo & Ensemble Competition gives band and choir students the opportunity to perform individually or in small groups for judges. Performers receive scores and feedback on their musical ability, technique and overall performance.
Baldwin’s second-place finish on tuba highlights the strength of Lakeland’s band program, as performing solo on a brass instrument requires strong tone control, breath support and musical expression. Lawson’s third-place finish in the mezzo-soprano category also demonstrated the talent within Lakeland’s choir program, showcasing vocal control and stage presence.
In addition to the two state qualifiers, many other Lakeland students performed during the event. Some competed for state placement while others performed to receive scores and comments from judges to help improve their musical skills.
The competition provided valuable experience for students and allowed them to represent Lakeland’s growing music program. Performances like these help students build confidence and gain feedback from experienced judges.
Overall, the weekend was a successful one for Lakeland High School’s band and choir programs. With Baldwin and Lawson advancing to the state competition in May, Lakeland will once again be represented among the top student musicians in Idaho.
