As spring approaches in Rathdrum, the Lakeland High School softball team is back on the field and ready to turn the page.
The Lakeland Hawks opened preseason practice this week with energy and focus, determined to make a statement in 2026. After finishing last season with a 10–18 overall record and 6–8 mark in league play, the Hawks are motivated to build on the lessons they learned and compete at a higher level.
This year’s squad will be led by a strong senior class of six players who bring experience and leadership to the dugout. Having played together for years, the seniors understand what it takes to battle through a long season.
“Experience is important and that’s what having a lot of seniors brings to the table” Delilah Zimmerman said.
Two of those seniors have already committed to play college softball, a testament to the talent and work ethic within the program. Their next-level experience and high standards have helped set the tone early in practice. Younger players are already feeding off their leadership, creating a competitive environment as the team prepares for opening day.
Coaches have emphasized fundamentals and consistency during early workouts. Cleaning up defensive mistakes and producing more timely hitting are major areas of focus after last season’s ups and downs. With a year of varsity experience under their belts, several returning players are expected to take big steps forward.
The Hawks know the Inland Empire League will once again be competitive, but the mindset this spring is different. There’s confidence in the air and a belief that last year’s record doesn’t define this group.
“We have a good group this year, It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” Zimmerman said.
With veteran leadership, college-bound talent, and a renewed sense of purpose, Lakeland softball is ready to show up and show out. As the season gets underway, the Hawks will look to prove that hard work in the preseason can translate into wins when it matters most.
