The pressure of choosing a future career can be overwhelming and complicated. Many students are told to “Follow their dreams” where others hear “Be practical, pick something that pays good.”
These pieces of advice feel like complete opposites, and many students have different feelings and views towards these statements. So which one is better?
While the saying “follow your passion” sounds inspiring, many think the more stable route is the best long-term decision.
Stability doesn’t always mean boring, it simply means you need to find something that is dependable, and doesn’t leave you with constant stress.
A stable career or job for example means you have a consistent income, security, work benefits, hours, and certain opportunities for growth within your job.
“I always grew up being told that having a stable job is important, and its important to be a hard worker, that constantly show up for your job. Those qualities alone will give you stability, and relieve stress.” Lily Dotson said.
Following something you’re passionate about can lead to an exciting and fulfilling life. When people love their job and what they do, work tends to feel like less of a chore.
For example, music artists and athletes show a passion for their job, which shows students that if they can do it, we can too.
Passion can fuel motivation, creativity, and resilience. You are more likely to show up, work hard and push through challenges while doing something you love.
Passion however does not guarantee success, many field jobs that are related to peoples passions are very competitive. There are thousands more people trying to succeed than there are opportunities.
This doesn’t mean dreams are impossible, but this makes the risk of financial instability, which can cause stress and make your future more difficult.
“I have always been told to chase after my dreams by my parents and my teachers, anything is possible if you put in the work and show up for your passion, it’s gonna be hard before its easy.” Cheyenne Peaugh said.
Choosing a stable career, provides security. Choosing your passion can be fun. Both of these are valid. It really comes down too how much work your willing to put into your job. It also matters what you value.
There is a middle ground instead of treating passion and stability like opposites, they can work together and become one.
