Does combat sports have a place in modern day times? Specifically in a school setting? I believe it does.
I believe the appeal of combat sports is that it fulfills the deep urge to let out aggression. Especially so in the male demographic, where a large portion of boys could settle a disagreement by putting on some gloves, and slugging it out.
Although, that does bring in the question.
βIs it safe?β
And the answer plain and simple is no. However it can be done in a safe, and controlled setting. Overseen by an official that would meet the requirements set forth by the school.
We already have wrestling which is a combat sport, and is inherently violent, but it’s just fine because they don’t throw punches? That doesn’t sit right with me.
Because let me tell you something, throwing someone on their head straight to concrete will hurt and do substantially more damage than punching someone will.
An alternative to wrestling is quite apparent. Boxing.
But point based boxing, like they have in the Olympics, or even Karate, or Taekwondo.
All of which include padded punches and kicks that are meant to score points and deal less damage than throwing someone onto their neck.
Now, I understand how it could be a logistical nightmare.
Waivers would have to be signed, the space to do it would be scarce, what time of year would it be , and the biggest of all. Budget.
I see all of those obstacles as passable.
As long as they follow the guidelines practically set up by the Olympics, it could be a very successful venture for more student engagement in school sports.
βI believe it would be something people would strive to do, and would bing people in to watch and enjoy,β Hunter Steward said.
High school wrestling and Olympic wrestling even though they’re levels apart, the rules are very similar, with distinct tweaks to match the skill level.
The same could very well work for other Olympic combat sports.
Bigger gloves, thicker shin pads, better covering head pads, and mouth guards required, would also push the safety first mindset all sports have.
The push for combat sports could very well be taken in leaps and bounds if the right people pushed for it.
I absolutely think that these sports are appropriate for high schoolers, because, learning the extent of what they can do, could save their life in a life or death situation, god forbid.
