The Lakeland High School (LHS) Hawks girls basketball team took on their league rivals the Sandpoint High School (SHS) Bulldogs in a conference game.
Up north the Hawks took care of business beating the Bulldogs 49-42.
“We really stayed together as a team all night,” Karstyn Kiefer said. \
As of last night’s game Jaeli Hoffman, the freshman guard, is leading the Hawks in points per game with a 14.1 average.
Senior guard Karstyn Kiefer leads the team in assists with an average of 5.5. While Kiefer is sharing the ball, she’s also taking it from the opponent with a leading average of 3.1 steals per game.
“Overall I think we could have played a lot better on defense and gotten more rebounds,” Kiefer said.
This is a huge win for the Hawks and this game was close the whole way through. Lakeland traded blows with the Bulldogs all night.
In the first quarter the Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 17-9, then in the second quarter the Hawks fell 14-9, but were sure to bounce back in the third and fourth quarter out scoring the Bulldogs 14-9, then securing the win with nine points.
Lakeland’s win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-2.
As for Sandpoint, their loss ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 12-2.
Despite being an intense game due to the conference rivalry, this is also a big deal due to the fact that these two teams will face off in one of the biggest games of the year. The annual Battle for the Paddle showdown, and it’s looking like a great preview for the Hawks.
“We know we can beat them, as long as we come to play how we always do,” Kiefer said.
Coincidentally, LHS and SHS will both be playing Moscow the next time they take the court. The Bulldogs will head out to face the Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Hawks will host them at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
