Two duals in one night? Heck yah.
A 98 pounders varsity debut? Check.
A junior hitting his 100th win? You bet.
During the dual on Wednesday night Carson Leonard hit his 100th win and was also one of the wrestlers that went 2-0.
“It’s awesome hitting 100 wins as a junior is pretty cool,” William Edelblute said. “Got to be pretty dialed. I mean getting 40 plus wins every season means you’re in pretty Elite company, I’m happy for him.”
The Lakeland wrestling team had a double dual with Coeur d’ Alene Vikings and Lakecity Timberwolves on Dec. 10.
The Hawks beat the Timberwolves but were unable to beat the Vikings.
Some of the wrestlers went 2-0, others went 1-1, and some went 0-2.
“We have a lot of freshmen in our starting lineup but we are wrestling great,” Leonard said. “We have a lot of potential and we just had a really close stool with Coeur d’Alene so I think it’s only up from here.”
“Some people treat it like a huge accomplishment where they get like banners and all kinds of crazy stuff for their 100 win but I think it’s kind of a marker for the rest of my career,” Leonard said.
Leonard is the two time state champion and a two time Tri-state placer.
Leonard wants to go undefeated the rest of his high school career and hit 200 wins, he also said it was a great environment for his 100th win.
Bryan Patrick went out for his first high school dual as a freshman at 98 pounds. He has been managing his weight and had a tough cut but came out and was ready to wrestle for his team.
He went 1-1, he teched the Lakecity wrestler, but got teched by the Coeur d’ Alene wrestler. In his second match his shot was good but the points were denied due to it getting called a slam.
Right before Patrick’s match the heavy weight wrestlers were up. It was a battle but in the second period. Jackson Patterson got picked up and slammed by the Coeur d’ Alene wrestler. The match stopped and it got heated.
The crowd and coaches went wild. Patterson ended up winning with the disqualification of the Coeur d’ Alene wrestler.
“I like when the crowd gets loud. I like when they start giving the other team problems, it’s my favorite,” Leonard said.
Cole Cooper wrestlers 150 and is truly showing why he is varsity his senior year.
“I don’t think anyone can beat me on my feet,” Cooper said.
Cooper went 2-0 pinning his first kid and teched his second. He goes out to his matches aggressively. He wrestles smart and it does not matter if he goes 150 or 157 he goes out and gives his matches everything.
Gage McWatters went out on the mat and got put in stressful positions.
“They call me Mr. Come back for some reason,” Mcwatters said. “It’s scary being in that position but I always come out.”
He came out on top off both the matches with a pin.
“I think the team wrestled pretty well. We wrestled better than we did on Saturday,” Edelblute said. “Definitely some stuff we need to work on to get better at the bottom but overall I’m pretty pleased I’d say eight and a half out of 10.”
