It’s that time of year.
It might be cold and gloomy, but it’s wrestling season.
Lakeland High School’s (LHS) wrestling team had their first official practice of the season on November 17th. The number of wrestlers has drastically increased from last year.
With varsity returners, or students who have never touched a mat, there is bound to be multiple wins this season.
Trying a new sport can be tough, especially one that involves a lot of physical integrity. Although, Junior at LHS Anastasia Demetrievia doesn’t let the rough aspect of this sport get to her.
Dmitrieva, influenced by other friends who wrestle, joined the team this year not knowing what to expect. She says she is scared for her first match, but is hopeful to win. Dmitrieva has been showing up to open gyms during the off season, and is determined to improve her skills.
“Wrestling is going great, I love it, but I’m scared of the diseases I can get from the mat and black flag,” Dmitriviea said.
While on the more experienced side, freshman at LHS, Colby Adams has been in the sport since he was 4. Colby expresses his excitement for the state, hoping he’ll place. Adams is most excited to win matches (weighing in at 113) and hang out with his teammates.
Since this is Adams first high school season, he gets to join the mat with his older brother, senior at LHS, Caleb Adams.
“Having Caleb with me makes it more fun, it’s nerve racking because he’s one weight class above me,” Adams said.
Another female wrestler, junior at LHS, Hunter Edmonson made the move from Sandpoint High School to Lakeland this year. Edmonson explains how she is happy with the change and is ecstatic about this season and her new teammates.
“This team is so much better. The girls are nicer and I get along with the boys,” Edmonson said.
Influenced by her dad, Edmonson started wrestling at just 3 years old. Edmonson is most excited to wrestle at Battle for the Pattle.
Continuing with wrestlers, Junior at LHS Isacc Brown started wrestling his freshman year for what he calls, “clout.”
Brown is most excited to miss class to go to matches and perfect his skills.
“I think I’m going to do good, there’s always room for improvement though,” Brown said.
With the new season, it brings the experienced and inexperienced, Lakelands wrestling team can’t wait to bring it on.
