Drama is a department that usually doesn’t get spoken about often, probably because in most high schools the main focus when it comes to extracurricular activities is sports.
This doesn’t make drama any less important.
They are skilled in their specialties and have the ability to do things most can’t. They can act in such a way it can bring you to tears or build props that make you stare in awe.
And now, they are preparing for districts.
District is the time of the year for drama when everyone is memorizing lines, putting last minute details on their props and preparing for the most important event of the year.
In drama, students compete individually to get a place at state but compete as a team to earn points for their schools so they can place at districts.
Though they compete individually for state, the drama department has always supported each other and cheered each other on at district competitions.
“The two classes get to come together and support each other and just be a great bonding experience,” Davis said.
For acting, there are many options they have to compete for at districts, some being ensemble musical, ensemble serious, solo audition, solo humorous, and many more.
Senior drama actor Cooper Allen is competing with a solo original serious as well as a original humorous with Andrew Cleiman.
Allen is one of the top actors in the department and has been a part of it all four years of his high school career.
“It actually made me cry and I hope he makes it to state with it,” drama teacher Mr. Jordan Brown said after watching Allen’s solo original serious act.
For the stagecraft department this year, they are building props and scene design.
A lot of work goes into their projects and they take a lot of time to complete. The standards are held high and their pieces must be perfect.
One student with a high probability of success in going to state is creating a tower. It is princess Fiona’s tower from Shrek and stands at an approximate height of eight feet tall.
It is three dimensional and will be considered a show stopper at districts.
“I’m pretty confident with my piece, I feel like it matches the level of those who made it last year from other schools,” Davis said.
