Rough Night for the Hawks

Devon Howell, Sports Writer

The smiles, the tears and the memories all this took place during the Lakeland Hawks varsity wrestling season senior night against the Post Falls Trojans.

The Hawks have a total of 10 seniors on the team this season and it is a very talented crew. At 145 pounds Riley Siegford and Colton Dow, 152 Blase Wright and Soren Sabatke, 160 Cooper Johnson, 182 John White and Jacob Lafollete, 195 Hayden Berger and at 285 Sam Feusier.

At practice earlier in the week Head Coach Rob Edelblute said “We are tired of losing to Post Falls, Seniors this is your last chance to stick it to them and take the win”.

The Hawks practiced hard all week to get ready for their match up against the the Post Falls Trojans. The Hawks were prepared for the Trojans and their far side cradle. All week the Hawks work on how to get out of a cradle by breaking the lock of your opponents hands and kicking your legs.

The match night would start off with a match at 138 pounds with Lakeland’s Lucas Williams and the final match of the night would be wrestled at 126 by Payton Wysong. Lucas put up a hard fight but it was not enough against his Post Falls opponent and the Trojans would start the dual off with six points. Riley Siegford would have a hard fought match at 145 pounds he fought hard and almost had the pin but at the last second his opponent would pull out the win. There would be many hard fought matches that night that would be very important for the Hawks. Unfortunately the Hawks would fall to the Trojans 27 to 55.

The Hawks varsity will wrestle February 6 against the Bonners Ferry Badgers.

After that match is the big district tournament against the Sandpoint Bulldogs and the Moscow Bears. This tournament will determine who will move on to the state tournament. The way districts work is Lakeland is allowed to take the top two wrestlers for each weight class and Sandpoint and Moscow is allowed to bring one from each.

This is a big match for not only all the wrestlers that get to go but the seniors on the team because this is there last chance to win a state title.

The Hawks will take place in the district tournament on February 19. This match will be the biggest match of the season.
