This year the theme for the Lakeland High School homecoming dance is A Night in Paris. Homecoming is the first big event of the year for Lakeland High School. Students spend weeks preparing for this dance. Well, this year, those weeks are being cut short.
Homecoming is creeping up on us, making it hard for LHS students to find dresses, and ask their partners to this once-a-year dance.
Only 3 weeks into school, the Student Council will rush the teens onto the dance floor.
“I feel like it’s a little rushed, especially if someone doesn’t have a date and they do not know how to explore their options quite yet rather than last year when they had more time.” Hunter Avriett said.
Buying dresses and suits takes a lot of work to do on such short notice. Most dress shops are appointment only, and not to mention, they cost a fortune.
Not only is it hard to get an appointment at an in-person dress shop, but with the dance coming up so soon, it is impossible to try to order a dress.
“It stresses me out to try to find a dress, but I am still excited about it.” Hannah Cutberth said.
Most online dress sites take anywhere between a week to a month to ship. With such short notice, online shopping has been taken out of the picture for LHS students this year.
Meaning that all in-person shops are being flooded with girls trying to find the perfect dress before the big day.
“I have been looking online and I am going dress shopping on Friday. I am going in-person in Spokane because online takes too long to ship.” Cutberth said.
With dresses and suits being so expensive, students typically save their money to be able to buy the dress or suit of their choice. With homecoming being earlier than expected, it causes a time crunch and financial stress.
Furthermore, with homecoming happening early, stores are struggling to restock after the back-to-school rush. This makes their inventory and ability to help people find dresses difficult because of the lack of clothes in stock.
“Since it is a lot earlier, stores are still trying to recover from back-to-school shopping and are not prepared for dance season yet,” Avriett said.
Attire is not the only problem that occurs in this situation. Teenage boys are expected to find a way to ask girls to homecoming within a little over 2 weeks. This can be especially difficult for boys participating in school sports.
With an already packed schedule, homecoming falls farther down the to-do list.
“There is not enough time to prepare to ask my girlfriend and building up that courage to ask and prepare takes time,” Avriett said.
Homecoming is a very recurring event, and most students will go all four years of high school, but with any recurring event, it can become boring.
With homecoming already becoming “boring” to some, the fact that it was rushed this year has made many people decide against going at all.
Many students have said they will go to the game instead of homecoming dance this year.
The stress of trying to fit everything into the first 3 weeks of school is too much for some students and LHS.
