Earlier this month, a personally highly anticipated movie was released, The Fall Guy, starring Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling. I was really excited about this movie since I first heard about it in November, and I was not the only one.
“I want to watch it because it seems like it’s a funny action movie, and I’m also an avid Ryand Gosling fan,” Keona Roemerman said.
This movie definitely held up to my high expectations and did not disappoint.
The movie focuses on stuntman Colt Seavers, played by Gosling, and his former fling and director of current movie he is working on, Jody Moreno, played by Blunt. Throughout the film, we uncover details about the relationship between Colt and Jody that contribute to the rom-com aspect of the film. More importantly, Colt must find the star of the movie, Tom Ryder, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has mysteriously gone missing.
Colt was previously an admired stuntman who worked alongside Jody as she was a cinematographer on a number of films, but Colt, unfortunately, gets horribly injured, leaving him to quit his job and ghost, Jody.
After his recovery and the start of a new life as a valet driver, he gets called back to the movie scene where Jody is now the director. The two have lots of tension and undeniable chemistry in the midst of the chaos of the film.
I felt this movie was mostly advertised as a romance with a small side of action, at least to me, but I would completely disagree and switch the two. This was an incredibly action-packed movie with high stakes and dramatic scenes.
I am personally someone who hates action movies. I feel like they are just so boring and pointless, like c’mon, just skip to the plot already, but I didn’t feel that way at all during any scene in this movie. I find myself on the edge of my seat, anticipating what could possibly happen next.
“I like how action-filled the movie was, but it also still managed to follow a good plot . . . A lot of action movies either have too much action or too much plot, but this one actually managed to keep a good balance and not completely lose one of the other halfway through,” Aspen Wike said.
Gosling and Blunt had amazing chemistry in the film and I was rooting for their relationship the whole time. It was clear as day that Colt was enamored with Jody, and he truly wanted the absolute world for her.
There is an amazing scene towards the end of the film where he is just fully encouraging her to follow her dreams as a director, and he really makes a good case for himself as a love interest.
Blunt was also stunning in this movie as she portrayed a wide range of emotions. I think Blunt is such an admirable actress as she gets so into character and is so wonderful at conveying her feelings through the screen.
This movie was jam-packed with references to other films and pop culture. There is a long conversation between Colt and Jody about the iconic romance movie Notting Hill along with a scene where Colt is blasting “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift in his truck.
It also was so creative cinematography-wise, as there is a scene where the two discuss over the phone whether the film Jody is working on should have a split screen scene. They themselves appear in a split-screen format. As Jody goes on to describe aspects of a split screen, such as the movement and emotion it can convey, the two appear to follow exactly what she is saying, and from a cinematic perspective, I was obsessed with this scene. It was probably my favorite thing in the whole movie.
It’s also important to note how much acknowledgment this film brought to the career of stunt performers in the film industry. Stunt performers work incredibly hard at crafting scenes audiences love, and this film really helped make that job noticed.
In the film, there’s a joke made about how there has to be an Oscar category for stunt performers, but there shockingly is not and this is something that Gosling and Blunt discussed themselves at The Oscars while presenting an award together.
“They’ve been such a crucial part of our industry since the beginning of cinema . . . Stunt performers and the action they design continue to create some of the most memorable moments in the history of cinema,” Gosling said in the speech.
Overall, this was such a well-done movie, and I feel like I have heard almost nobody talk about it. I don’t think I have had this much fun watching a movie is a while as I was constantly laughing and experiencing high anticipation continuously throughout the entirety of the film.
