The Lakeland Hawks track and field team competed on the first day of districts at Coeur d’Alene High School on May 10. This was a crucial step for our throwers, jumpers and long-distance runners, who aimed to secure a spot in the state meet by placing in the top two for their events.
The boy’s 4×200-meter relay team, comprised of Apolo Gratzinger, Scott Glass, Jaron Yager and Weston Saputski, took first place with a time of 1:31.85.
Kenai Munyer received first place in the discus with a throw of 115 feet and 3 inches, an impressive feat for any thrower, let alone a freshman.
Brayden Carrel took first place in shotput with a throw of 47 feet and 6 inches.
Garrett Hall placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 39.25 feet.
Ben Roth took first place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet and 10 inches, followed by Kayden Karle, who received second place with a jump of 5 feet.
Kros O’Brien took first place in the pole vault with 12 feet.
The girl’s 4×200-meter relay, made up of Natalee Rose, Melia Gilbert, Karstyn Kiefer, and Sapphire Ruelle, also took first place with a time of 1:46.11.
Jackie Robbins placed second in shotput with a throw of 35 feet and 6 inches. Robbins also placed second in discus with a throw of 114 feet and 9 inches.
Macy Bretveld took second place in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet and 8 inches.
Alanna Hinkle received first place in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, which also is a new school record. Hinkle crushed the previous record of 9 feet and 10 inches, set in 2011 by Kaitlin Whitesitt.
Ziya Munyer received first place in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet and 4 inches and second place in the long jump with 15 feet and 4 inches.
Ziya, a junior, and Kenai Munyer were each able to climb to the first place position in their respective events, an insane feat for the two siblings. Ziya Munyer is a returner to state, but Kenai, a freshman, will be making his debut.
The second regional meet is May 10, beginning at 2 p.m. at Lewiston High School.
