Senior Mia Marquez has signed her letter of intent to be a part of the University of Idaho Spirit Squad.
Marquez has been a part of the Lakeland Dance Team for all four years of high school and has been a part of the cheer team for all four years as well.
“I love the campus, and the feel around it,” Marquez said. “The team environment is great and I’m excited to join it. The coaches are amazing. I like the idea of cheering in the Kibbie Dome, not cheering outside in the snow.”
The University of Idaho’s cheer team consists of cheering for every home football game and some away games. They get to show off their tumbling and stunting to the home crowd.
But once February hits, the team gears up for the USA Collegiate Nationals in Anaheim, California. The team took sixth place this year.
“I’m excited about everything, but mainly football games in the Kibbie Dome and nationals in Anaheim,” Marquez said.
Marquez will be studying sociology and Spanish while at the University of Idaho. Her career plans are to be in some sort of social work department.
“I’ve wanted to go to UI since last year,” Marquez said. “It’s close to home as well. It’s not too close to home, but it’s also far enough away to live my own life.”
Moving away from home can be exciting, students get to live life on their own and do whatever they want to do. But with this, it can also come with many challenges.
Marquez is most nervous about having trouble finding her classes throughout the campus.
“Finding my way around classes and just exploring the campus, being in front of thousands of students and fans in the Kibbie Dome,” Marquez said.
Marquez is super grateful for the opportunity and is excited to get her Vandal life started.
