The Lakeland Hawks (7-11) battled it out with the Lewiston Bengals (11-7) in a doubleheader on April 23. The Hawks’ win streak was sadly put to an end by the Bengals, losing 12-9 and 6-0.
The Hawks were holding on strong in the first game and exploding in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs and trying to keep the game in reach, but the Bengals were hot all night, not letting anything slip by them.
“Errors in the field cost us the game for sure,” Jace Taylor said.
The second game was a rough one for the Hawks, who were unable to produce any offense. The Bengals’ defense was almost perfect, shutting down the Hawks while their offense cleaned it up at the plate, putting six on the board, and taking both wins home with them.
No one could touch Austin Topp for the Bengals when he was on the mound, shutting it down completely. Topp, being just a sophomore, has a bright high school career ahead of him. Lewiston is now just one game behind the Vikings in the 5A Inland Empire League standings.
The Hawks’ rest of the season is all conference games, and they are looking for some big wins to put them in a district position for the first time since 2019. Excited to see where the rest of the season takes them, the Hawks are ready to flush these most recent losses to the Bengals and put their best foot forward for their doubleheader against the Sandpoint Bulldogs on April 25.
