The Lakeland Joint School District 272 sent out surveys asking the community their opinions on four-day school weeks.
However, if implemented, this means longer class periods.
“It would only extend our periods by only seven minutes, that’s it,” Brian Williams said.
Instead of 50-minute periods, classes would be 57 minutes, which is not a dramatic change whatsoever.
This also allows students to recharge and recoup for the following week. This is especially good for juniors due to the workload they have and the strenuous year they have to endure.
A slight downside to this is that when there is a holiday on Monday, it will be substituted for Friday. So, instead of going to school Monday through Thursday, students would go Tuesday through Friday.
This change will be beneficial for many purposes. Not only does it give students a well-earned break each week, but it will also give more time for busy teenagers to take care of necessary things, such as doctors, dentists and orthodontist appointments.
They also get the opportunity to have more of a social life which is important in this stage of life.
“It also gives us something to look forward to every week,” Broxton Lukey said.
Some schools around the area have already transitioned to this schedule and more are planning on it. This is a great reason why we should transition.
With more schools switching to a four day weekend, there will be more complications with sports and extracurricular activities due to the fact that some may have school and other schools do not. That can make it an inconvenience for attendees to come in on their day off. Especially because some may be out of town due to the open space for vacation which means the teams could be lacking attributes.
This can be related to how no one wants to be called into work on their designated day off, where they finally get a break.
This is also great for the ability to give students time to catch up on projects or missing work. It can help reduce stress for the students, knowing they have an extra day to catch up. It can also help the student’s mental health additionally.
Of course, for all the procrastinators out there, it allows them to do last-minute work.
