It is the most significant event of the year for juniors and seniors—the most infamous event in high school. Young girls dream of it, authors write about it and directors film about it.
This is one of the most prominent milestones in everyone’s high school career. It is something everyone should at least experience once.
However, with significant production comes a considerable cost and an extreme amount of helping hands.
It depends on how many tickets are sold, but Lakeland High School should have raised enough money to carry over into next year.
LHS Student Council plays a huge role in this annual event.
“My role on the prom committee is to make sure everything goes smoothly and is organized since I am the Chairman,” Amanda Olson said.
They have to make the perfect night through simple decorations. With that comes the theme of the dance; they have to make it easy but creative and without repeated themes. The decorating committee comprises freshmen and sophomores on the student council, which gives the upperclassmen a break and a chance to get ready.
“They complain at first, but they learn to appreciate it once they become upperclassmen,” Allison Knoll said.
Security is also a massive part of preparing for the formal. Since it is not at the high school, creating a safe environment for the attendees is critical. One priority to keep the environment safe is ensuring no one is under the influence.
A typical tradition for LHS students before prom is dinner at a classy restaurant. This is especially popular among couples. Therefore, the school can save money by not hiring a caterer, which is nice. While snacks or a type of dessert may be provided, it is still cheaper than a full meal.
The next big part of prom is who will be crowned king and queen.
This year, there are ten nominees for the throne. There is Charlie Dickerson, Colin Killian, Samantha Fuller, Liam Bradford, Scott Glass, Baylee Frank, Alyssa Byrne, Addy Hobbs, Oliver Everett and Gerald Yeahquo.
Each year, they get a picture posted of them with a bio that answers fun questions about themselves. This is a fun idea because it shows everyone a little window into who they are.
With this, each couple also gets an interview on Hello Hawks with Lincoln Wood. These people are picked by their senior peers, who then take the top five boys and girls from the votes.
At prom, once the king and queen are announced, having them share a dance is a tradition.
