The Lakeland Hawks Varsity softball (2-5, 1-1) split with the Moscow Bears (5-7, 1-1) at home on April 11.
In the first game, the Hawks jumped on the Bears early and scored four runs in the first, after a homerun by senior Peyton Sterling.
“We started so good, and we just kept the momentum going our way the whole game,” sophomore Delilah Zimmerman said. “Peyton’s bomb helped us a lot early.”
Freshman Abby Helmholz pitched a gem for the Hawks and shut the Bears out through five innings until the Bears finally got on the board in the sixth inning.
Zimmerman went 3 for 5 at the plate with a home run, three singles, and two RBIs. Emma Avalos went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Sterling hit a home run with two RBIs.
As for the Bears, Addie Branen went 2 for 3 at the plate with a home run and one RBI. Kelly Stodick went 2 for 4 with two singles and an RBI. Sammy Pfiffner went 2 for 4 with two singles and one RBI.
The Hawks racked up 11 hits compared to the Bears’ 10 and held a .393 average at the plate compared to the Bears’ .333.
In the field, the Hawks were almost perfect, with one error. The Bears had three errors in the field and one double play.
As for pitching, The Hawks starter went the whole game, striking out five and only walking four. She allowed nine hits and pitched a gem.
The Bears pitching staff started with Freshman Ella McCallie, who went three innings and gave up two hits, had three strikeouts, and four walks. Sophomore Allison Dorigo came in for relief and went three innings, giving up seven hits, two home runs, three walks and five earned runs.

Game two started rough for the Hawks after giving up eight runs in the first two innings, but the Hawks managed to get one run across at the bottom of the first.
Zimmerman went 2 for 3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI. Bailey Frank went 1 for 2 with a double; Sterling went 1 for 2 with a home run and an RBI. Alexis Hannah went 1 for 3 with a double and scored.
As for the Bears, Megan Highfill went 3 for 4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs. Sadi Newlan went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Hannah Robertson went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.
Helmholz started on the bump for the Hawks, giving up three hits, two walks and five earned runs. Mia Kesner was relieved and gave up 12 hits, one walk and eight earned runs. Kesner now has a 17.50 ERA.
Kelley Stodick went the whole game for the Bears, giving up five hits and five strikeouts, with two earned runs.
The Hawks will play the Lakeside Eagles (4-6, 2-4) on April 13 at the home.
