Schools are only given so much money. The rest is in the club or committee’s hands to determine where they fall short and how to make ends meet. Student Council makes arrangements for most of the events.
This is where the fundraising comes in.
One of the biggest hits is the Parker Subaru ticket fundraiser. This is an annual fundraiser each January for many programs at Lakeland High School. This is where Subaru donates a car and gives out raffle tickets that students can sell for $10 each. Fundraising is a great way to get committees involved with the community and have a say in what happens in their program.
Many have also done the stereotypical bake sale, selling baked goods to the community. Others have done car washes and penny drives. These have all been successful but have yet to be outside the box.
“In rodeo, fundraising is extremely important because that is how you go places,” Taylor Howe said.
People should be more creative with their fundraising ideas because that piques their interest and increases participation. As high schoolers, we want to participate in something worthwhile. No one will put their money towards something they do not think is worth it.
“Fundraising is important because it provides the necessary funds for students and events,” Laura Kelley said.
Another way to fundraise is dances, however, this creates more work for the student council.
There are also talent shows and silent auctions. A talent show may be complex because it depends on the students signing up, but it could be a fun way to have laughs and allow people to exhibit their hidden talents.
Silent auctions have been vital to LHS by making raffle baskets for people to bid on at public events. This is a fantastic idea, but it is less involved because it is primarily parents involved and not very general.
A lip sync competition would be a great idea because they are a hit at Homecoming and Battle for the Paddle. Again, the only con would be having student involvement and planning practices, but having people pay a few bucks to get in would be a great way to help raise money for the school.
This is another fun way to involve the student body and interact with their peers.
