While artificial intelligence has become a considerable part of today’s society and continues to expand through various digital platforms and tools, one question remains in the photography industry: Will it run out of business?
AI plays a big part in the world today, and with the new photo and editing opportunities now that allow people to generate their pictures, photographers are left in a rough spot for their future.
Most people would rather generate pictures than go to an in-person photographer, whether the reason be pay, social or environment; they would instead use an AI-generated website rather than hire someone to take photos for them.
¨People would not have those good memories with the family or even the funny stories behind the photos that they can tell when asked if they decide to digitalize their photos with AI,” Chase Petersen said.
The advanced Photoshop options also come with the new AI tools, making people lean more toward generating their pictures.
With millions of options like making their body more toned, fancier clothes, makeup, different environmental settings, adding people in, etc., customers would let a fifteen-second AI website do the work instead.
¨People could use AI to get images in place of taking photos for them, which is harmful to future businesses and the photographers who already have a business,¨ Aly Caywood Said.
These advanced editing tools can become very harmful quickly. By just putting a name and description in the search bar, people can generate nastiness and potentially ruin lives or reputations. This has been seen with tons of celebrities lately.
These sites are not the only AI-type taking over photography. Newly generated cameras have also recently taken a rise.
The camera does everything for people, like adjusting the settings to the environment and lighting, zoom and focus, and everything in between. All that is needed from peers is to hold the camera to what they want in the picture.
¨If AI cameras are being used, then it harms the photography industry; it takes the art out of learning how to use a camera properly and makes photography classes completely useless,” Chase Petersen said.
The argument of AI photography is a lose-lose situation. There are too many pros and cons for either side to be necessarily correct, most find it a good source and that it will work better than an in-person photographer, others disagree.
Most people still believe in going to an in-person photographer or doing photography themselves. Whether this is out of fear of AI taking over or just out of the experience part, most people still believe photography will not be jeopardized in this situation.
¨I think it would be fun to play with AI editing, but for personal use rather than professional¨ Aly Caywood said.
I believe that AI can be helpful and a good source in some situations, but I do not believe it is reliable or should be a first option. I fear that, like most careers, AI may take over photography and make it harder for future photographers to get jobs and have the opportunities they worked hard for throughout their learning process.
This can also be harmful to current photographers, as it may run them out of business and cut down their clientele.
AI photography can be helpful if trying to edit things out or change little background details, but I do not believe that making AI cameras and other such advancements is the right idea for our future.
