The Lakeland Hawks varsity tennis team competed at Lake City High School. They lost to the Timberwolves, 8-4.
Toby Tebbe and Shelby Wear competed in the mixed doubles division and were able to capture the win.
Tebbe was very happy with how they competed.
“Really good. We were able to hit our shots where we wanted to, we communicated well, and we played to each other’s strengths,” Tebbe said.
After the first couple of matches, it started to rain, and it had some effect on the athletes. When it starts to rain, the ball becomes heavier, which makes it harder to hit the ball effectively. It also makes the ground slippier and could risk injury to the athletes.
Tebbe was able to luck out and just miss the rain, so the rain did not affect his match at all.
Ben Ryan was able to pick up a win in the singles division.
Derrick Clement and Amanda Olson won in mixed doubles.
Brock Raebel and Jayden Ruelle won their doubles match, which would be the last win for the Hawks. Raebel was very proud of their match even though it was a rough start, starting out at 3-0. Raebel would then hit some good aces on his serves, and they would come back and win.
Tebbe and Raebel both agreed that everyone needs to work on their volleys at the net.
The Hawks play next on Monday, April 8, at Lakeland High School at 3 p.m. against Coeur d’Alene.
