The Lakeland Hawks softball team (1-4) came up short against the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (4-2) in a doubleheader at the Vikings’ home field on April 4.
In the first game, the Hawks fought hard but came up short 20-11. The Vikings are always a problem in any sport, and softball is no exception. The Hawks had a slow start, putting up just three runs in four innings. Despite scoring eight runs in the final two innings, the Hawks could not stop the Viking’s offense.
The Hawks were not ready to back down after that first game, and they put that loss behind them, so they were prepared to play. Lakeland held the Vikings to one run through the first and second innings, but in the third inning, CHS put up six runs while only allowing the Hawks to score one run from the first inning to the fourth.
In the 5th inning, Lakeland put up two runs, which would be the end of the scoring for both teams for the rest of the game. The Hawks lose a close battle 7-3.
The Hawks have not had much success with the Vikings through recent years, considering that this was the eighth consecutive sweep for the Vikings.
Lakeland plays next against the Moscow Bears on April 11 at 3:00 pm at Lakeland High School.
