The Lakeland Hawks softball team (1-2) fell to Frenchtown and Hamilton in non-conference play in Missoula to kick off the season. The Hawk’s road performance was not the start to the season they strived for. The score for the Frenchtown game was 12-2. The next game, the defense stepped up and held Hamilton to a 6-4 game.
“Nobody likes losing,” Mia Kesner said. “But you can always learn something from every game, no matter win or lose, and I think these games were a huge learning experience for the whole team.”
Spring sports in North Idaho are always a hit or miss weather wise and being indoors can seriously mess with a team’s ability to compete.
“It’s a hard transition for sure,” Kesner said. “There’s no better feeling than being out on the field and not experiencing that before the first couple of games. It was hard.”
The first-game jitters are real, and some would argue that the first games are the hardest games in the regular season.
The Hawks faced off against Timberlake Tigers shortly after the two losses, and they were ready to put a in on their record. The Hawks took down the Tigers 3-1 in a single at home.
