The Lakeland Hawks (3-1) baseball team has been putting in the work and it has paid off in the early season. They took the win in the doubleheader against Bonners Ferry (4-11) on March 23. In the first game, they won 11-5, and in the second game, 15-5.
Roan Reilly started on the mound in the first game, and the coaches switched him after the first inning to Garrett Farrell.
Evan Shanley struck out the side in the last inning.
Kevin Slover was the catcher for the entire first game. Hunter Avriett was pulled up from JV for the game and caught the entire second game. He was able to make multiple plays at home plate and help get the third out to end one of the innings.
“I feel that I started kind of bad but I pushed through and got it together,” Slover said. “I think I can work on not getting in my head. I think we did well. As a team, we started down, but we picked it up with teamwork and perseverance and got each other through.”
Cash Lund and Raiston Ellwood both hit a triple at bat and were able to get some of the boys home. Lund has a .500 batting average and an on-base percentage. Ellwood has a .714 batting average with a .800 on-base percentage.
“I feel like I got into my head, but I was able to push through and get the triple; I should have kept my same approach at the first at-bats,” Lund said. “I think as a team, there are things we can work on, but we were able to pull through with a win.”
They were dominant at offense, stealing bases and making it home. They all went out there swinging and not letting the ball go by without a fight.
In the second game, Tadhg Ellwood pitched for the first three innings, and then Jace Taylor pitched the end of the game and was able to keep Bonner Ferry from scoring.
