As the snow has finally melted, the Lakeland Hawks Varsity team played their season opener in a doubleheader against the Lakeside Eagles. The Hawks lost the first game 6-4 but then won the second game 6-2.
Roan Reilly started on the mound for the Hawks in game one. Reilly threw three complete innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. He also counted up four strikeouts.
This was the first time the Hawks were able to step onto the field this season. There were some fielding errors that the Hawks had, but still played an excellent game.
Cy Reeves started on the bump for the Eagles and threw four innings and allowed nine hits on Reeves, giving up four runs, two of them being earned runs.
Garrett Ferrell took over for Reilly in the fourth inning, giving up four hits with one earned run and two unearned runs.
The Hawks left many runners on during the game and had some momentum going into the seventh inning but, unfortunately, could not capitalize on it and would lose 6-4.
After taking a quick break, the Hawks geared up to come back from the loss and started out slow but ended up taking the win.
Sadahiro Patterson started on the mound for the Eagles and threw six innings, giving up nine hits and four earned runs, with six strikeouts.
Tadgh Ellwood started for the Hawks, throwing for three innings with two hits, six strikeouts and two earned runs.
Cash Lund hit a huge double in the third inning to break open the scoring, and the Hawks would take a one-run lead.
KJ Slover also hit a huge double in the top of the sixth inning to break the scoring open, putting the score at 4-2.
Jace Taylor came in for the Hawks and shut it down with four innings, giving up three hits and striking out five.
The Hawk’s next game is on March 23 at 10 a.m. against the Bonners Ferry Badgers at Lewiston High School.
