Many people have their favorite foods: chicken alfredo, caesar salad, sushi or grilled cheese.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are a staple food for many American households, with how quick and easy they are to make and how cheesy and crunchy they are for people of all ages to enjoy.
Growing up, many people had grilled cheese sandwiches for a simple lunch or dinner.
Many restaurants give an option to have grilled cheese, sometimes paired with tomato soup.
Coeur d’Alene, has a grilled cheese restaurant called Meltz.
Meltz does not make traditional grilled cheese sandwiches. They add crazy toppings that someone would never expect on a grilled cheese sandwich.
Olivia Gibson enjoys a good grilled cheese sandwich, but at Meltz, she ordered a half sandwich of the Oinker, which included brisket mac and cheese barbeque sauce and grilled onions.
Gibson’s favorite grilled cheese sandwich was from Panera until she had Meltz.
“Certain food should be left how they are, but things like grilled cheese sandwiches just get better when things are added to them,” Gibson said.
Others see grilled cheese sandwiches as only plain.
“I think once you start adding ingredients beyond cheese and bread, you may be creating something beyond grilled cheese,” Steve Seymour, a junior and senior English teacher at Lakeland High School, said.
As everyone in his class would know, Seymour is a food connoisseur. He has a set way to make his grilled cheese sandwich to ensure it is cooked perfectly.
“I like the gold bag cracked wheat for toast and Tillamook medium cheddar for cheese that is sliced consistently thin, but you need enough, so it’s a grilled cheese,” Seymour said. “If the butter is directly out of the fridge, I will slice it thin and slam it on a plate to soften it. Nothing is worse than cold butter on soft bread.”
Seymour also enjoys eating his grilled cheese sandwich dipped in ketchup. It may seem odd to most people, but Seymour believes it’s a perfect flavor combination after being introduced to it by his wife’s family.
“It’s okay to dip your grilled cheese in ketchup,” Seymour said. “You need to try it before you judge harshly.”
Grilled Cheese sandwiches in all shapes and forms can bring joy to people with their simplistic deliciousness.
“Foods like grilled cheese make me feel nice, warm and full,” Gibson said. “When you have a nice meal like that, it brings joy and comfort that everyone can appreciate.”
