Hundreds of meals are produced and handed out daily by a group of ladies in the commons. Without them, kids at Lakeland High School would come to school and leave school hungry.
Not only do they prepare and hand out food to kids, but they also brighten people’s day.
These ladies are some of the kindest people in the LHS staff. With a bright smile and a kind word, the food they provide is immensely better. You can only hope the students return the kindness they put out.
“They are all so nice, and Robin is just the kindest lady,” Amy Fortin said.
Some students do not understand their importance and take their kindness for granted. The role they play is unlike any other within schools. They help to make sure that students get food even when they may not have the money for it.
“They always make sure that kids get food even if they don’t have money in their account. I don’t think Robin turns anybody away from food,” Marty Fuhriman said.
Not only do they give kids food, but they also make sure there is food ready before lunch begins for students who may not be able to receive it during lunch hour. They also are there to provide food to students in situations where there may be a late bus. They work hard every day to ensure the food they provide reaches students and that no kid ever feels hungry while in school.
The kindness of these ladies can only hope to be returned back to them.
“I don’t feel like they are treated horribly, but to be fair, I am not in the lunchroom during breakfast and lunch, so I don’t know the interaction between students and the lunch ladies,” Fuhriman said.
The lunch ladies are often portrayed as just that, but they are so much more. They ensure kids are getting nutritious foods to help keep them fueled for the long day ahead. They also make sure that the food is not only healthy but also accessible to anyone. This includes putting themselves out there and helping kids who look like they need it.
Lunch ladies have one of the most challenging jobs in the school system: making sure the food is good and what they give out is nutritious. They are required to stand for hours preparing meals, cleaning up, and doing dishes.
Without the lunch ladies, kids would not be able to get the fuel they need to help their minds and bodies remain functional throughout school days.
The quick moving and pressure of getting the food out to kids on time can get to be a lot for these ladies. They work long, hard days to benefit others.
Without these lunch ladies, the school would not be the same.
“Without them, kids would come to school and leave school hungry. They are a vital role in providing for the kids,” Fortin said.
