The Lakeland Hawks Wrestling team had a very busy and successful weekend. The Hawks started out the weekend facing the Timberlake Tigers and the Pocatello Thunder, who made the nine-hour drive.
The night started out with a couple of pinfalls for the Hawks with Zach Teal, Kade Knopp, Duke Williamson, Carson Leonard, Griffin Tamagni and Cole Cooper.
Jayden Terry then lost by a pin.
The Hawks then racked up plenty more pins with Kross O’Brien, Austin Howell, Thayer Sabatke, Gage Oles and Carter Vanek.
The Hawks won 56-24.
The Hawks then celebrated the class of 2024 seniors, Westen Sobel-Schlewitz, Marc Fisher, Duke Williamson, Gage Oles and Annika Thompson.
Following the ceremony, the Hawks took on the Pocatello Thunder.
Kade Knopp, Carson Leonard, Duke Williamson, Griffin Tamagni, Cole Cooper, Westen Sobel-Schlewitz, Gage Oles and Carter Vanek all picked up wins in leading to the Hawks winning 56-27.
Once this long day of wrestling was finally over and the mats were all rolled up, the Hawks got a good night’s rest and then, the following day, took the 20-minute bus ride over to Coeur d’Alene High School.
North Idaho Rumble is an annual tournament that has over 20 teams that compete. It is full of competition.
The Hawks had nine placers, with two of them being champions.
Zach Teal, at 98 pounds, took fourth. Caleb Adams, also at 98 pounds, took fifth. Carson Leonard was able to win his weight bracket at 113 pounds. Duke Williamson, at 120 pounds, took fifth. Kross O’Brien, at 145 pounds, took fourth. At 152 pounds, Austin Howell took fourth. Thayer Sabatke took fifth at 160 pounds, and at 285 pounds, Carter Vanek took third place.
The boys took fourth place as a team.
In the girls’ division, Teagan Patrick took fifth place at 107 pounds, and Annika Thompson was able to win her division at 165 pounds.
The Hawk’s next tournament is on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3. It is an overnight tournament. They will stay the night and then wrestle the following day.
“I am looking forward to Bonners because it is a tournament I can win,” Williamson said.
