Lakeland High School hosted the third annual Alumni Basketball Game at the high school on Jan. 18., at 7:30 pm. Entry was ten $10 per person.
The proceeds go towards Lakeland’s Battle for the Paddle fundraiser. On the same night, Lakeland also hosted their bingo night to fundraise differently for Battle for the Paddle. Initially, this game was supposed to be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, but due to weather conditions closing school that day, the game got postponed to Jan. 18.
The alumni game is something not only students look forward to, but also teachers and past students. Graduates of Lakeland High School can come to play in this game against other alums to help raise money in a fun way that gets the whole community involved.
While having fun and appreciating Lakeland’s history, the game also allows students to donate money to their school in a different way. The money goes towards the Lakeland strong fund.
The fund gives money to families in need, as well as a percentage to the school for Battle for the Paddle and other school-wide events. Families and friends also donate when attending the game and help the community by giving back to the school.
For the participating alumni, seeing familiar faces and getting back on the court can be a sentimental and highly anticipated thing to do.
The final score was 86-82, with the Green team beating the Gold. Alden Waddington and Randy McCabe combined for 71 points for the green team, and Scotty Hocking scored 38 for the gold team.
Fundraising support is greatly appreciated at Lakeland. The Battle for the Paddle spirit event is Friday, Jan. 19.
