Snow Day!
Yet, it is not only due to the snow.
Schools around the Lakeland 272 District closed Wednesday due to intense weather and a number of burst water pipes.
LHS closed for the day on Jan. 17 due to a leaking pipe near the entrance area.
With the extreme temperatures North Idaho is experiencing, this is a common issue.
The local Super 1 also experienced a similar situation.
A pipe burst above the store’s cart area, flooding the entire main entranceway with inches of water.
Luckily, no one was injured in this incident.
LHS is one of many schools that have dealt with pipe issues.
Twin Lakes Elementary also suffered an incident causing water damage.
STEM Charter also experienced a bursting water pipe.
Pipes breaking is not the only worry freezing temperatures bring on.
The roadways become more and more dangerous as freezing temperatures mix with snow.
Post Falls School District had a bus slide off the road into the ditch near Post Falls High School.
Buses are not the only victims of this vicious weather.
Multiple accidents have happened due to the icy road conditions.
Most school districts in the area have had snow days due to the risk of accidents.
Winter storms only make these conditions worse.
High school students even struggle with getting into their cars because the doors are frozen shut.
Some students’ cars will not even start because of the low temperatures.
This winter weather is also affecting sports at LHS.
Coaches have canceled games and practices because driving in the weather is unsafe for the students or visiting opponents.
This also affects preparation for Battle for the Paddle.
Due to the winter storm, Lip Sync practice and the Lakeland Alumni game for Battle for the Paddle were postponed. The alumni game raises a significant amount of money for the fundraising portion of the competition.
A rising concern is that Sandpoint High School, LHS’s opponent in BFTP, may not be able to get to LHS if the road conditions remain the same.
