The Lakeland Hawks wrestling team had a very busy winter break. While most people were sleeping in, the team practiced at 8 a.m. and then left for Sierra Nevada on the morning of Dec. 27 and started the 14-hour trip in minivans.
Once the team arrived, there were dozens of teams that were ready to compete.
Out of 92 teams, the Hawks were able to place 22nd, with two placers. Junior Dylan Scott took sixth in the 215 weight class. Senior Annika Thompson was able to take fifth place on the girl’s side in the 152 weight class.
It was a long five-day tournament, and once the Hawks arrived back home, they only got to be home for a short three days before turning around and heading for the Ford Center in Nampa, Idaho, for the annual Rollie Lane Tournament.
This tournament was just as tough as always, and the Hawks were not able to come out of this tournament with any placers but were able to place in the top 50 teams out of 88 total teams from all over the West Coast.
There were teams from Montana, Nevada, Utah, California, Washington and many others.
The Lakeland Hawks wrestling team is gearing up to face division rival, the Sandpoint Bulldogs, in the annual Battle for the Paddle event on Jan. 19.
This event is a huge fundraising event between the two schools. It also is a sports competition that also includes cheer, girls and boys basketball, and other small competitions. The wrestling team is practicing hard and looking forward to beating Sandpoint once again.
