Coach. Mother. Teacher. Former student-athlete. Sarah Nave does it all. She has a bubbly personality, and she is beyond competitive. In her free time, she likes to spend all day every day in the summer going to the lake. When it comes to winter, she likes to get away and go snowmobiling.
“Mrs. Nave has helped me with everyday life skills that I use every day,” Lakeland High School sophomore Delilah Zimmerman said.
Other times, she runs her athletic kids around wherever they may need to go for their sports. Nave is the track and field coach and was the assistant coach last year.
Outside of Nave’s adventurous lifestyle, she is a teacher at LHS, and she teaches three forms of cooking classes—teen living, culinary arts, and international cuisine. All classes teach a variety of life skills many may need to know.
Teen Living is a class offered at LHS that teaches students how to focus on various aspects of teenage life and development. The class may cover topics such as relationships, communication, decision-making, goal-setting, health and wellness, and personal finance. The goal of teen living classes is to help students learn essential life skills and prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of adulthood.
The curriculum may vary depending on the school and the instructor. Still, the overall aim is to support teenagers in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will help them thrive both in and outside of the classroom.
Culinary arts is another class Nave does a very good job at teaching. Culinary arts is a course that focuses on various aspects of cooking, baking, and food preparation. The class may cover topics such as kitchen safety, food handling and storage, recipe reading, knife skills, cooking techniques, menu planning, and food presentation.
Students in culinary arts classes often have the opportunity to practice their skills in commercial kitchens for catering events. The goal of culinary arts classes is to help students develop the technical and creative skills necessary to work in the food service industry, as well as to foster an appreciation for food culture and cuisine from different regions and traditions.
“I am in her culinary arts class, and it has helped me learn how to cook,” Maddie Lutz said.
International cuisine is a course that focuses on the study and preparation of foods from a variety of cultures around the world. The class may cover topics such as the history and traditions of different cuisines, ingredients and flavor profiles, cooking techniques, and cultural influences on food.
Students in international cuisine classes often have the opportunity to learn how to make dishes from different regions and countries. The goal of international cuisine classes is to expose students to a diverse range of foods and culinary traditions and to help them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural significance of food.

Nave is married and has two children who both play sports. Levi Nave plays football, baseball, and wrestles. Katie Nave plays basketball and softball and has recently started playing volleyball. They both go to Lakeland Middle School.
A fun fact about Nave is that she went to LHS and wanted to become a teacher. She went to college to become a teacher but then switched and became a dietitian, but she always knew becoming a teacher was going to be something she wanted to do. So that’s why she teaches cooking classes. Her experience in college made the transition easy for her.
