The Lakeland Hawks wrestling team had their first tri-match of the season.
This match had three teams: the Hawks, the Lakeside Eagle and the East Valley Knights. The Hawks took a major victory over Lakeside by 73-9, as well as a victory over the East Valley Eagles by 76-12.
Lakeland’s matches started at 98 pounds, with Caleb Adams from the Hawks wrestling Zach Teal from the Hawks. This was a tough match, and the two Hawks proved to be an equal pair skill-wise. In the end, Teal took the victory. Adams LL, by forfeit.
Sophomore Peyton Sardinha was able to get control over his opponent with ease, allowing him to get an 11-1 victory. Later in the tri-match, Sardinha went up against Lakeland’s own Thayer Sabatke. Sabatke won this match 4-2, but both boys put up a huge fight.
One of the Hawks girl wrestlers took on a challenger in a higher weight class. Sophomore Teagan Patrick lost the match due to being pinned down by the Eagles.
Gage Oles had an exceptional night for the beginning of the season. He was able to pin down the challenger in his first match. His next match, against a new opponent, was lost by Oles 4-2.
Carson Leonard, a 130-pound freshman, pinned down both of his challengers extremely fast and showed the Knights and Eagles that he was a force to be reckoned with on the Hawks. “Carson Leonard had a very dominant performance against both his guys” multiple teammates said about his performance versus his opponents. “It was fun he seemed more intimidating than it was.” Leonard said.
Justin Baxter and Carter Vanek quickly took down two of the Eagles as well, Joseph Carlone and Kael Hutton, pinning them down seamlessly.
“Justin Baxter came out as a backup for someone and did very well in the first round,” Cole Cooper said.
Sophomore Cole Cooper had a strong night as well.
“Went pretty good, my first match I won 9-0 against a tough Lakeside kid.” said Cooper regarding his matches.
