Turkey is cooking in the oven, and the smell of freshly made pies fills houses. Thanksgiving has finally past.
Kids were able to avoid school for the week, and in the case of the Lakeland Joint School District, even an extra Friday on Nov. 17. Kids love anything that gets them out of school, and the fact that a holiday is on top of that makes it more exciting.
Thanksgiving has been celebrated all over the United States for many years. People gather together with family and friends to celebrate the harvests and other blessings of the past year.
Food is made and blessings are said before the meal, and people feast on the delectable food placed before them.
“Over break, I hung out with my grandma and I spent time with my family at my grandpa’s house,” Zoie Burrington said.
Time spent with family and friends is key, especially over the holidays. Making time for grandparents and even parents is important because it is never know when it might not be possible anyone. This time spent is good for making core memories.
This year, students at LHS were granted an extra day off for break. This made the break a total of ten days long. Students and staff alike both enjoyed this extra day, as it added to the amount of time spent with loved ones and friends. It also gave people more time to prepare for Thanksgiving day.
“I like the longer break, rather than the schools that don’t have as much time,” Layla Benson said.
At Post Falls High School, the students and staff were only rewarded a five-day break for Thanksgiving. This is because Post Falls does not have school on Fridays. The start of breaks in the middle of a week has never made sense.
Why would someone decide to make students and staff show up to school for 2 days just to have the rest of the week off? It makes no sense.
People love spending time with family and friends over breaks, and making them shorter makes the break less meaningful.
Thanksgiving break also gives families time to decorate their houses for Christmas. Putting up Christmas lights, decorations and Christmas trees is the best time of the year. The downside of putting up such decor is that it takes up a substantial amount of time. People spend days decorating the inside and outside of their houses to make the holiday season extra special.
“We decorated our tree and ate a bunch of food,” Benson said. “My grandma also came from Oklahoma.”
Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pie, ham and rolls are only a few of the many foods people enjoy on Thanksgiving day.
People save their appetite, and prepare for the loads of food they will consume at the dinner table. So many families look forward to this special dinner, as it is a time of thanks. The family gathers around the table and goes around saying things they are thankful for, bringing the family closer together.
“I had potatoes, mac and cheese, rolls, deviled eggs, turkey, salad, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, key lime pie and gravy,” Burrington said. “All of the average foods.”
Thanksgiving break is the perfect time to spend time with family and share thanks. The longer the break for this holiday is, the more time students and staff have to enjoy these special times with their families. This longer break is more plausible and enjoyable for everyone, not only students.
