The Lakeland Hawks swim team dominated at the Idaho state tournament in Boise from Nov. 3 to Nov. 4. The boys were able to take second place, finishing behind the Bishop Kelly Knights. The girls were able to place seventh out of 26 teams.
The boys had multiple placers, including freshman Michael Mamola, who was the state champion for the 500-meter freestyle and the 200-meter freestyle. He was also a part of the 200-meter medley relay race that placed third and set a new school record with a time of one minute and 45 seconds alongside Ethan Abbott, Ethan Harrell and Micah Minix.
The boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay race took fourth place and set a new school record of one minute and 37 seconds. This team consisted of Logan Harris, Harrell, Brody Walters and Minix.
The boys 400-meter freestyle, consisting of the same four people as the 200-meter freestyle, took 3rd and again set a new school record with a time of three minutes and 27 seconds.
Thayer Sabatke placed 9th in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 37 seconds.
Abbott set a new school record and took second place in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 55 seconds. He also took 5th place in the 200-meter individual medley.
Harrell was able to claim 7th place in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 32 seconds. Harrell also took fifth place in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 35 seconds.
Harris took seventh place in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 30 seconds.
Walters took ninth place in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 30 seconds.
Minix took ninth place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 28 seconds. His brother, Elijah Minix, was able to barely beat out his brother in the same race to claim eighth place.
The girls’ swim team was also just as dominant with setting school records.
The 200-meter freestyle relay race set a new school record and took 4th place. The team consisted of Makena Mamola, Micha Bretveld, Addy Hobbs, and Sarah Smith.
The same team competed in the 400-meter freestyle relay and set another school record and took 4th place with a time of four minutes and five seconds.
Makena Mamola was able to set a new state record and is a state champion in the 200-meter freestyle, as well as setting another state record and capturing a state title in the 500-meter freestyle race.
The LHS swim team dominated the whole season and is gearing up for another dominant season next year.
