The Lakeland Hawks girls’ soccer team took on the Timberlake Tigers in the last match of the year before they start district play. They were able to upend the Tigers and win the match 3-2.
The Hawks started out the scoring early into the game, with sophomore Natalee Rose making a corner kick to put the score at 1-0.
Some of the Hawks’ passes were not connecting with each other, and that led to some momentum for the Tigers, however, the score stayed at 1-0 before halftime.
The Tigers put one through the net, making the score closer tied at 1-1.
Evelyn Bowie got a penalty call and was able to put the ball past the goalie to put the score to 2-1.
In the last two minutes of the game, the Tigers were able to put a point on the board and tie up the game with under two minutes left of the game. This gave the Hawks some fire to be able to score with little time left and scored.
Rose put a second goal through the net to make the score final 3-2.
The Tigers were not able to score again, and the Hawks were able to get the win and have some good momentum going into districts.
Even though the Hawks were able to get a win in the win column, senior Shelby Wear did not think the Hawks played to the best of their ability.
“It was good, we had a bad game, we should have worked as a team a little bit more,” Wear said.
Senior Regan Wright had the same feelings about the game.
“I’m glad that we won the game, but we could have scored a lot more on them,” Wright said.
Wright is looking forward to districts.
“Our past couple of games with Moscow have been close, 1-0, so when we finally play our best, we can beat them,” said Wright.
The Hawks play the St. Maries Lumberjacks next Thursday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. at Sunrise Rotary Field.
