Lakeland’s student council has been hard at work preparing for this year’s homecoming events. There is a lot to be done. Each grade is individually working hard, from posters for the halls to practicing for the lip sync.
For some students, this is their first experience with preparing for homecoming, while for others, this is their fourth and last time doing it.
With the overarching theme for the dance being casino night and each grade having its own individual themes, there is lots of decoration to be done.
“I’m very excited to decorate halls. I have lots of ideas for it, and I’m excited to participate,” Colton Cleiman,a junior class rep, said.
Many student council members have dedicated a lot of their free time to preparing for the upcoming week in addition to the time they spend in class. Some members stay after school or spend their free periods in room 42, getting everything ready.
Some members have been using this opportunity to improve and show off their hard work; a great example of this is the sophomore student council kids.
“I am not excited (about the dance) per se, but I am prepared; this year will be much better than last,” said Brock Rabel, sophomore class president.
He strongly believes that the Sophomores will win all the competitions this year.
Other students, such as Jasmin Allen, have been working hard with minimal support. This year, the senior student council only has two members: Allen, who is the ASB class president, and Benjamin Ryan, who is the Senior class president. While the other grades in the student council have many members help, Allen and Ryan are on their own.
Allen’s to-do list is full of tasks to prepare for homecoming.
“I am the chair of the parade committee. I communicate with coaches, make posters and organize the order of the parade along with two other members in class. I also make decor and handle lip sync music and choreography for the seniors,” said Allen.
To help prepare, the student council makes committees. There are many committees for homecoming. They consist of a spirit committee, food drive committee, dance committee, royalty committee, parade committee and assembly committee.
Each committee has hard-working students dedicated to the task at hand, ensuring that everything goes smoothly.
Along with decorating, the grades have been hard at work with their lip sync practice. Many members make a lot of memories and have a great time at these practices.
“My favorite thing has been the time we spend at lip sync practice,” Rabel said.
Rabel is not alone in this, many other students are excited for the lip sync.
“My favorite part so far was the lip sync practice last Wednesday. We had lots of people come,” said Allen.
With homecoming swiftly approaching, with the big game being on Oct. 13 and the dance on Oct. 14, the student council committees are putting the final touches on everything to ensure they will be ready for the big week.
There are many ways you, as a student, can help with that. You are welcome to show up this Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help your grade decorate the halls.
You can also help your grade by joining your lip sync rehearsals and performing at the assembly or by simply donating to all the fundraisers and showing your best school spirit.
