Spongebob SquarepantsThe Cosmic Shake
Video games based on other media outlets are very common. Spongebob games are not new and have been around for many decades. The latest release of a SpongeBob game can make or break the coming days of playtime.
Some of the most notable experiences of this generation’s memory come from Spongebob games. How will the newest release of Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake stack up against other Spongebob games?
The newest game, developed by Purple Lamp Studios and publisher THQ Nordic is sure to let many experience an entirely brand new story, including the lovable yellow sponge and his friends in this newest 3d platformer. This includes new characters such as different bubble goo monsters and the newest helpful friend to Spongebob, Madame Cassandra.
The story starts with SpongeBob and Patrick. This lovable duo meets a fortune-teller named Madame Cassandra, and she offers them a great gift, a bottle of mermaid tears. According to undersea myths and legends, this bottle can grant anyone’s wishes. And you guessed it, the irresponsible nature of the iconic duo gets the best of them, and they use up their wishes, causing destruction. This negligence causes the very fabric of space and time to tear, causing all of Bikini Bottom and more to be destroyed.
The game’s main goal is to put Bikini Bottom and the world back together. This is no easy task for the main characters. Spongebob can not do this alone, so Patrick, guided by a wish from bubbles, is able to turn into a balloon and safely guide Spongebob back on track. He also will help in battle and help Spongebob when he has low health because what else are friends for?
On top of Patrick being a companion during this journey, the player can expect many other cameos during the play through. This includes Sandy Cheeks and many others. Each player has a unique play style.
It is also a fighting game, so don’t expect your walk around new worlds to be peaceful because the player will have to get their hands dirty. There are enemies and bosses all around the different playable worlds that will have to be fought in order to continue.
There will also be a pre-order function, which will allow you to gain access to exclusive customizable content and skins for the characters. The trailer showed off a few and included pre-historic Spongebob, Spongebob in a band, alien Spongebob, and many more.
Overall, I believe this game is something to be excited about, at least if you liked the previous installments of these Spongebob games. They are not for everyone. The platforming can get a bit boring, and the fighting can get repetitive, but overall it’s a good time. It may be one of those games you play once or twice through, enjoy and not touch for another ten years, but it still looks good.
The 3D animation work that is being incorporated into this game is stunning as well. It is exciting to see the SpongeBob games slowly evolve and become something greater than a cheap cash grab using a large television show’s name. I’m not sure if this game will be able to compete with some of the classic SpongeBob games, such as Spongebob The Movie: The Video Game, but nonetheless, I’m excited to see where it takes us.
