Hawks Win on Buzzer-Beater
The Lakeland Hawks basketball team clutched their second win of the season Monday night.
On Dec. 19, the boy’s faced Timberlake highschool on the tiger’s home court.
Senior, Scotty Hocking made a game-winning buzzer-beater to pull off the 74-72 win. Hocking closed the night with 22 points alongside Nick Nowell, who scored 20.
“We were able to limit the number of turnovers,” said Hocking.
“Our defense was terrible in the first half, but we came back in the second half. Nick Nowell and Scotty were our main shooters, and we scored 50 points after halftime,” said Aiden Rothrock.
With a significant break between games, the Hawks have extra time to prepare and come together.
“A lot of us our sick, so having a few days off will be good for us,” said Hocking.
“As long as people still do their job in the gym while we practice this week, we’ll be okay. Our cardio is going to be rough,” said Rothrock.
Despite Pullman being a top team in the state, the Hawks plan on heading into Tuesday with confidence, like any other game. The team knows they need to get better at communicating, stop letting small mistakes from getting in the way, and bring up the energy.
“Pullman is very good, so being able to stick with them will give us a better idea of how we are as a team,” said Hocking.
The varsity team’s next game will follow Christmas and be held away at Pullman(5-0) on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
Games will continue for the boys’ and girls’ teams throughout the rapidly approaching winter break.
