The Kansas City Tiebreaker is commonly used to resolve ties between teams.
Each team is given the ball on the 25 yard line and is given three downs to score a touchdown.
If team A fails to score a touchdown the possession is given to team B. They are then given the chance to score a touchdown within three downs.
If team B succeeds, they win that match, if they fail, the possession goes back to team A and the cycle continues. If both teams score, the match continues until one team fails.
Then, imagining team B winning, team C (the one seed team) will play team A, or the loser of the first match.
If team C wins, they will then play team B. If team C wins this match they then have to play team B again because it is a 2 round elimination.
If team C loses then they still play team B again and if team C wins that second match then there will be a final match and the winner of that is the ultimate winner.
In this situation Lakeland High School (LHS) is the first seed or team C in this example. For LHS to win the Kansas City Tiebreaker we must beat the loser of Lewiston High School and Sandpoint High School then beat the winner of Lewiston and Sandpoint twice.
The ultimate winner of the Kansas City Tiebreaker will take the fifth seed at state.
Some matches could take ten minutes. Others could take hours.
In order to make it to state the Lakeland hawks will have to be mentally strong and have grit on the field. This is a big deal for our boys so please show up and show out!
“We’re gonna give it all we got and make it a long night for the other teams,” Dreyden Smith said.
The tiebreaker will be held at Coeur d’Alane High School Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
