From passing grades to passing attendance.
The policy for attendance at Lakeland High School (LHS) has changed.
There is more leniency for the missing days and some days will not even count towards the initial nine. The nine day count is where students are only allowed to miss nine days and if they miss more they have to petition for their credits.
“I have missed in the past for medical reasons,” Layni Carrera. “I feel like the petitioning is unnecessary because sometimes it can be urgent or serious for students missing a lot. I like the new policy better now because it gives more leniency to students that are prone to sickness or mental health reasons.”
The days that will not count towards the nine days are In-school Absence, Activity Absence, Suspended Absence, Medical Absence, Bereavement, Prearranged Absence, School Excused, Court Appearance, Disability Related, and Self-Directed Learner.
Those are the days that will not count for the nine days that students are allotted to miss. An absence that does not fall under those will be counted against the student.
Some teachers over the past years have had a two day policy meaning if the student has an absence the student has two days to make up for missing work.
If the student reaches over the 9 days the student will have to petition for their credits. When the students petition for the first team they will receive credits for all passing grades.
After the second offense in a different semester the student will receive an “incomplete” and directions on how to earn their “incomplete” credits.
After the third offense the student will lose all credits, they have the option to petition to the board, but an alternative placement might be recommended.
If the student has ten consecutive absences they will be enrolled from LJSD.
