At the end of every school year the dread fills the students of Lakeland High School (LHS). Finals will soon be taking place and students are trying to figure out which ones they will be exempting. But how do you decide which ones to get rid of?
The first step to deciding what finals will be slashed off the list are figuring out how many you can wave. Students are either placed on one of two lists. Green or gold.
Green is a 3.30 to a 3.69 unweighted cumulative GPA. Gold is 3.69 to a 4.0 and higher. Then once the student finds their name on the list then they have to pick which final(s) to wave. Which is honestly a gift to us because other schools around here do not give their students this opportunity.
“It’s nice because we never had the chance to do this at STEM,” Garret Snyder, former STEM charter student, said.
Not only did they not allow waivers but they also did everything all in one day. So, it is a privilege that we only have to take a few a day.
For some, this will be the first semester they have earned their ability to waive a final.
“I am so excited to finally get to wave a final,” Rory Spurway, freshman at LHS, said.
Freshman begin with a clean slate when they enter high school, no previous GPA, no nothing. So, it causes them to lose the privilege of waiving finals since they have no predisposed GPA. Not only is it some people’s first times it is also some people’s last time ever taking a final as a Lakeland Hawk. Seniors even have to take them early due to graduation being before when finals are actually scheduled.
Many seniors can’t even waive finals due to taking only college classes where waiving is off limits.
“I normally never waive finals anyways but it’s weird to think about that I am approaching my last weeks of high school,” Noah Best said.
Best usually never waives finals because he likes the opportunity to raise his grade in those classes by getting high sores on the finals. He prepares for this by usually studying two weeks prior to taking the exam.
“I think its enough time for me to understand and memorize all the material,” Best said.
Many have preferences on which ones they would want to waive if they could. Most usually waive their math because it is the most daunting.
