The Lakeland Hawks softball team went down to Airport park for the first portion of the district tournament.
The Hawks faced the Moscow Bears and the Lewiston Bengals.
Lakeland went on to win their first game against Moscow 16-6, but later on fell to the Bengals in a devastating 9-8 loss. The Hawks blew past the Bears 16-6. The win continues a trend for the Hawks in their matchups with the Bears: they’ve now won three in a row.
Reagan Masters spent all six innings played on the mound, and it’s clear why: she surrendered five earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up eight Ks. On the hitting side, Jaiden Corbey was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, five RBI, and one stolen base.
The Hawks were firing on all cylinders throughout every inning and on both sides of the ball which eventually would lead to another dominating victory over the Bears. “Winning game one was huge for us as a team going into the next game” Delilah Zimmerman said.
Despite the win, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the Hawks. Lakeland suffered a hard loss to their next district matchup against the Lewiston Bengals. A tightrope match all the way to the end with a final score of 9-8. The Hawks took a fairly large lead early on in the game, holding the Bengals to low scoring all throughout the early parts of the game. The Bengals started to really put some runs up and tied it in the sixth inning 8-8.
The Hawks knew what they had to do in order to win this game, but the Bengals were not going to go down that easy. Lewiston went on to shut the Hawks down, holding them to zero runs scored in the seventh inning. This set up the Bengals for a walk-off situation. A fighting chance was all the Bengals were looking for and they got it, and capitalized.
The Bengals walked off, winning the game and sending the Hawks home with a 1-1 day.
This is not the last time the Hawks will play. Lakeland will play their league rivals, the Sandpoint Bulldogs, to continue there district games and in hopes of advancing to postseason.
