The Lakeland Hawks softball team took on the Post Falls Trojans in a non-conference double header.
Post Falls hit Lakeland with a four-run sixth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result.
The Hawks took a 12-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Trojans. That’s two games in a row now that the Hawks have lost by exactly five runs.
This game the Hawks had Reagan Masters on the mound for all seven innings and for obvious reasons.
She only allowed 4 earned runs, and the other 8 unearned with 10 hits. Although the game ended in a loss for the Hawks, Masters was ready to go, not letting the score get to her.
Alongside Masters in the top performers for the Hawks, Ada Blakemore was giving the Hawks a hand going 2-4 at the plate with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
The Hawks are always improving in some way no matter the scores.
“We really just lacked confidence and needed to pick it up,” Kate Dewey said.
The Hawks played a beautiful ball game going into the second game but just missed there shot to end the losing streak losing the second game 9-7 and Post Falls completing the sweep.
Kiersten Drake made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Raygen Dutton was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
As for Post Falls, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 6-8 and putting the Hawks down to 6-12. Lakeland almost had it closed out in this game and played a more clean and aggressive ball game.
Despite falling short, this will be a better note to end on rather than the first.
“After the first game we wanted our revenge, that first loss made us play way more as a team in the second” Dewey said.
Lakeland and Post Falls will both be playing Coeur d’Alene the next time they take the field. The Trojans will host the Vikings at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Hawks will host them at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
“This team is definitely beatable, we just need to focus and remember to have some fun,” Dewey said.
