Springtime brings a refreshing change of weather, making it a perfect season for warm outdoor sports with longer days.
Spring sports are healthy for student athletes to get back into their routines while enjoying the sports they play.
Student-athletes coming out of the winter blues can look forward to these sports that take place in the Spring.
Tennis
Tennis is a sport that mainly relies on how the weather is coming out from the long winter nights into the brighter days.
With the spring time rolling around, it makes the temperatures warmer and daylight hours tend to get longer, making outdoor sports a great after school activity.
The 2025 season tennis teams are coached by Coach Ryan, Coach Hall, and Coach Williams.
Tennis can be a fun sport to play because players can choose to have a partner in doubles matches or play single matches alone.
“I enjoy tennis especially since you are able to choose your own partner and work closely with them,” Tennis athlete Audrey Halgren says, “It is a good hobby and something new that I tried this year to expand my horizons.”
Track & Field
Another sport that many high school students like to participate in during the springtime is track and field.
Some students choose to do track and field because they love running, more time to hangout with friends, to challenge themselves, or even for their physical fitness.
“I prefer the social aspect because I get to talk to and cheer on my teammates,” Gloria Peterson says, “I also like that track helps me become a better athlete and allows me to push myself both physically and mentally.”
Lakeland’s track and field practices start in mid February and end in mid May.
The coaches are Coach Mattila, Coach Kiefer, Coach Munyer, Coach Carvajal, and Coach Milks.
“I would have to say Coach Kiefer is my favorite coach because he is better than the rest.” Track athlete, Chloe Neff said.
Baseball
Baseball is a fun team building sport that can teach players how to work together and communicate.
The main positions are pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders.
Pitchers are responsible for standing on a mound and throwing a baseball at the batter in hopes to aim good enough to get the batter to strike out.
Catchers are behind the home plate and their job is to catch the balls that make it past the batter.
Infielders’ jobs are located between first, second, and third base, and shortstop. They try to catch balls and attain ground balls to get the opponents teammates out.
Outfielders’ job is to cover all of the places in the outfield and they need to catch flying balls and get ground balls.
“I would have to say catcher is my favorite because you get to control the field in that position.” Hunter Avriett said.
